Pigeon Forge, Tennessee has come a long
way since its establishment in the 1800’s. Pigeon Forge TN appropriately
received it’s name. One of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee’s first businesses was a
furnace and iron forge. In 1820, Isaac Love established and operated a
furnace and iron forge. In May of 1841 a post office was built with the name
of Pigeon Forge. The name Pigeon Forge was established from the iron works
and the Little Pigeon River that quietly runs through the town. For years
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee remained a quiet town just for the people who
settled it but by the 1930’s, even though there was no where to stay but
private homes, visitors slowly began to pour into town. In 1946, before the
war, a piece of property was sold and was turned into present day Pigeon
Forge pottery, which was the first place for tourist to go. Pigeon Forge,
Tennessee also had a main road that ran right along the river, this road
help two general stores and two churches. There were also stone cabins built
along the river for tourist. By the early 1980’s Pigeon Forge, Tennessee had
a firmly established city government and a Department of Tourism. Pigeon
Forge, Tennessee then started an expanding tourism market. New businesses
and new job opportunities brought in a large increase in the population of
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
A major turning point for Pigeon Forge, Tennessee happened in 1986 when the
country star, Dolly Parton, spent her time and money to her theme park,
Dollywood. Dollywood, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, was built on the site of
Silver Dollar City attractions. Since Dollywood opened Pigeon Forge,
Tennessee has grown greatly with tons of entertainment in the area for
everyone in the family. By mid-2001 hotels and motels had grown to over
8,000, there are over 600 cabins, condos and cottages spaced out all over
the mountains in the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee area and there are several
campgrounds in the area for you to enjoy. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is also
the home to many top restaurants, attractions, shopping malls and
entertainment halls.
Over a century ago Pigeon Forge, Tennessee was a small, peaceful town where
cornfields were nestled and there were only two traffic lights along the
main highway. That highway, which is now known as highway 441, was once a
two-lane now has six lanes and is known as the “parkway”. Of the hundreds of
side streets are thousands of
