Smoky Mountains

The Smoky Mountains, which are called “shaconage”, or blue, by the Cherokee Indians, are home to one of America’s most popular national parks. The Great Smoky Mountain National park is part of North Carolina and Tennessee and covers well over half a million acres. The Great Smoky Mountains are home to different species of wildlife, plants and they have some of the oldest, most beautiful mountains in the world. The park is quietly nestled in the most beautiful part of the southern Appalachians and it was established in 1934.

Among the many 100,000 species in the park there have only been about 14 percent that have been identified, and among them are over 600 that are completely new to science. The Smokies have a combination of natural richness and deep human history, this history includes the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokees’ ancestors with some Scotch-Irish pioneers originated in the Smokies and began settling there in the late 1700’s. Cultural remains have been preserved in the park at different sites, which contribute to the park’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is no bad time to visit the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, although summer and fall are always the most popular times to visit. Each season in the park brings a new look and feel for everyone to enjoy. However, sometimes in the winter months, if the weather is bad it can affect some park activities and result in closed roads.

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park offers activities, such as, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, camping, and self guided tours so you can ride through the park and enjoy the scenery. This national park certainly has something everyone can enjoy. Make sure to make your next vacation to Smoky Mountains National Park area.
